For 120 years, this distinctive festival has taken the concept of outdoor celebrations in an entirely different direction – trading parade floats for a 137 ft pirate ship, city streets for waterways, and typical festival wear for pirate costumes. While cities across America host their own unique outdoor gatherings, none combine maritime tradition, community spirit, and theatrical flair quite like Tampa’s beloved pirate festival. Find out what makes Gasparilla Pirate Festival one of the most unique outdoor celebrations in the U.S.

The world’s only fully-rigged pirate ship

Jose Gasparilla II is a 137-foot, three-mast schooner made of steel and has become the centerpiece of America’s most unique outdoor festival. With the aid of several tugboats, the massive ship makes a 90-minute journey from Ballast Point to the Tampa Convention Center.

A tradition like no other

Gasparilla draws people from all over the U.S. to Tampa, but to locals, watching the Ye Mystic Krewe make landfall is a 120-year-old tradition. The most popular way to celebrate is by getting on Hillsborough River and enjoying festivities with friends.

The Sant’Yago Knight Parade

Gasparilla isn’t just one day – it extends into February with a unique night parade in historic Ybor City. This Latin-influenced celebration combines pirate themes with Hispanic heritage, featuring illuminated floats and Spanish roots stemming back from colonial America.

Hundreds of boats out on the water

Book a Captained boat and enjoy prime views of the parade and invasion, away from the crowds. “You’ve got to dress up,” says Molly, a Tampa local. Sport a tricorn hat to mark yourself as Captain, or tie a colorful sash at your waist. She helped our Editorial team create this authentic on-the-water itinerary.

  • 9 AM: Meet Owner or Captain at dock and load up
  • 10 AM: Launch boat and cruise the Hillsborough Bay
  • 10:30 AM: Hangout near Davis Islands (best viewing spot for invasion)
  • 11:30 AM – 1 PM : Watch Jose Gasparilla ship invasion
  • 1 PM: Relocate boat to Bayshore Boulevard waterfront
  • 2 PM – 5:30 PM: View Parade of Pirates along Bayshore Boulevard
  • 6 PM: Begin packing up and head back to dock

The Ye Mystic Krewe social impact

The organizing group behind Gasparilla isn’t just about parties – they’ve contributed millions to local charities and education through their Community Fund. Members of the Krewe represent Tampa’s business and civic leaders who use this platform for community development.
