2-hour itinerary: Manatee spotting in Biscayne National Park

Before you go:

    • Show up 30 mins early at the dock (paperwork takes time).
    • Stay hydrated  (Miami sun is no joke).
    • Go with a Captain for local insights on the places to anchor.

Hour one: Exploring Biscayne Bay

Wildlife sightings define top-rated nature experiences, with dolphins appearing in 68% of wildlife-focused reviews. As you make your way to Biscayne National Park, keep your eye out for dolphins and especially for “Pinky,” a pink dolphin and rare albino species known to frequent Miami waters.

Hour two: Meeting manatees

Anchor near the harbor north of the Visitor’s Center, a top place to see manatees. If you booked a boat with snorkeling gear, spend 30 minutes exploring underwater to see hundreds of unique fish species. Remember to keep 50+ feet from manatees if self-driving.

  • Look out for: Manatees, “Pinky” (rare albino dolphin), sea turtles.
  • Best photo spots: Biscayne National Park, manatee gathering spots.
  • Bring: Reef-safe sunscreen, hat, extra change of clothes.

2-hour itinerary: La Jolla sea caves & whale watching

Before you go:

  • Dress in layers (ocean temps are 10-15° cooler).
  • Book early in migration season for best viewing.
  • Show up 30 mins early at the dock (for paperwork).

Hour one: Exploring La Jolla Cove

Depart from San Diego Bay, enjoying several sights from Coronado Bridge to the USS Midway. Cruise to La Jolla Cove—just 15 minutes north—where you have views of ancient sea caves as well as leopard sharks and sea lions sightings

Hour two: whale watching

Cruise 3-5 miles offshore where whales frequent feeding grounds. Look for telltale spouts, flukes, and breaches. Gray whales often travel close to shore during migration, while blue whales prefer deeper waters. End with a sunset view of the San Diego skyline.

  • Look out for: Gray whales (Dec-Apr), blue whales (Jun-Sep), dolphins, sea lions
  • Best photo spots: Point Loma coastline, downtown skyline, Coronado Bridge
  • Bring: Motion sickness pills, warm jacket, camera with zoom lens

  • Show up 30 mins early at the dock (you get it).

Hour 0ne: Hidden coves & 360 Bridge

Start your journey at the 360 Bridge, heading east toward the city. Your first stop is the legendary Party Cove, a hidden inlet popular with locals. Continue to Little Italy, a serene passage through an arched waterway that’s only accessible by boat. This tranquil spot offers unique views of luxurious waterfront homes nestled among limestone cliffs.

Hour two: Waterfront restaurants & scenic routes

Cruise past Austin’s famous dock-and-dine establishments – Hula Hut, Mozart’s Coffee, and Quince. Stop for a quick bite or continue west into Hill Country, where marsh grass frames the lake and wildlife becomes more abundant. End your journey with a golden hour return under the 360 Bridge, capturing the perfect sunset photo of this Austin landmark.

  • Look out for: Hidden coves, blue herons, waterfront mansions, limestone cliffs
  • Best photo spots: 360 Bridge, Little Italy arched waterway, sunset reflections
