Meet Captain Robert Tilley (“Ret”). Captain Robert E Tilley, ‘Ret,’ grew up sailing with his parents and sister on a 26ft Pearson sailboat named ‘Ambiance’ throughout the late 70s and 80s. His parents were teachers and had summers off, so they would spend many weeks sailing from Narragansett Bay, RI, to Salem Harbor, MA, and all points and islands in between. He learned to sail with a compass, charts, and a depth sounder – the only electronic navigation instrument on the boat. He would read the Eldridge Tide Book on long journeys and practice tying knots. Through these truly fortunate experiences, a passion was grown from being on the ocean, a passion he enjoys sharing with others aboard the Sara Rose today. Ret graduated from the University of Massachusetts – Lowell in 1992. Following he worked as an engineer, including 17 years with the Department of Navy, providing direct support to the U.S. Navy nuclear submarine fleet. For the past 25 years, Ret has been cruising and fishing the waters from Maine to Rhode Island. Additionally, he has skippered various vessels, both power and sail, from Florida to Maine and the Caribbean. Captain Ret is a Coast Guard Licensed Master Captain License Number 725655
